Brijwasi Overcomes Disability to Support Family

Brijwasi, a 34-year-old woman with complete blindness, embodies resilience and determination. Belonging to the Kol community, societal norms prevented her from marrying due to her disability. She lives with eight family members, all struggling to make ends meet due to unstable employment and limited land. Despite these hardships, she took on a leadership role as the president of her village’s self-help group.
Recognizing her determination, Arthik Anusandhan Kendra began supporting the SHG, which nominated Brijwasi for individual assistance. With AAK’s support of ₹31,000 and an additional loan from the SHG, she purchased a buffalo. This single investment transformed her livelihood—the buffalo provided six liters of milk daily, ensuring a steady income for her family. Over the course of a year, her earnings reached ₹3,825 and the buffalo’s value increased to ₹80,000. Moreover, with the buffalo now pregnant, her financial prospects are set to improve further.
Beyond income, this opportunity gave Brijwasi and her family financial stability and dignity. When linked to the disability pension, she began receiving ₹1,000 per month, further securing her future.
Her journey is a testament to the power of timely support and grassroots initiatives—small interventions that create lasting change. Brijwasi’s story is a beacon of hope, proving that perseverance and community backing can turn challenges into triumphs.
